"The District of Columbia has more pedestrian fatalities per capita than any other city in the country," said GIVE WAY member Cody Jastromb. "Most local residents are unaware of this staggering statistic." The District averages one pedestrian accident every 18 days. In their research, GIVE WAY discovered that 79 percent of pedestrian accidents occur during normal weather conditions and that 75 percent of pedestrian deaths are caused by the inattentiveness of drivers.

GIVE WAY hopes to encourage safe commuting for both drivers and pedestrians. Through exposure and education of the growing problem of pedestrian fatalities can gain recognition and in turn change the way people travel through the District.

To raise awareness of pedestrian fatalities, the GIVE WAY team will perform a series of reenactments. The reenactments will feature "die-ins," chalk outlines, and handouts explaining the issue. The campaign hopes that through their message of accountability and respect for D.C. law, they can help reduce fatalities.
