My project aims to decrease the barriers in understanding and implementing asthma management care in Baltimore. Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that causes airways to swell and narrow leading to shortness of breath, wheezing and difficulty breathing. Baltimore City has some of the highest morbidity rates in asthma in Maryland despite being home to a few of the nation's best health care providers. My project's primary goals are to understand what role design can play in helping health care providers explain asthma management care to patients and how design can help patients understand their asthma symptoms.

There is no cure for asthma but it can be managed with proper understanding of the condition.
Can design have an impact on how asthma action plans are understood by patients?
Sidebars_challenge

Asthma patients are using emergency rooms in Baltimore as a way to manage and treat their condition on a daily basis. The ER should be a last resort for asthma patients but many do not know what to do when they are having an asthma attack.

Sidebars_solution

Redesign asthma action plans to help patients better understand their condition and what can trigger an asthma attack.
