Design is a social activity that can inform, motivate, teach, promote or simply entertain. Like Art, it can carry with it a sense of awe and help us look at who we are and how we affect the world. It comments and critiques our beliefs, our values and our nature. At its best, it finds solutions to our shared problems. The design program at The University of Tennessee encourages the exploration of diverse problem-solving methodologies, innovative investigations and creative research in all forms of communication. We provide an undergraduate and graduate education stressing creative and intellectual thinking, awareness of individual, social, cultural and communicative issues, the integration of new technology, and a concern for ethical implications and the natural environment. The program encourages interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaboration with colleagues, within the university, and within the profession. In addition to a host of studio and service learning projects, students in the Graphic Design program at UT have collaborated on Public Art projects, worked with the Honors Program, Theatre, Computer Science, Anthropology, Physics, English, Engineering, Architecture and the School of Law.
