Identifying the problems, and developing possible solutions.

PROBLEM #1

For one, security information at KCAI is extremely disparate, with lots of overlapping information, cluttered with useless facts, hiding the most vital information. Students don’t want to read it.

How can all the information needed be reorganized, cut down, and designed in a way that is appealing to college students?

SOLUTION #1

The wallet-sized information booklet does just that. It’s easy to find, since you can keep it in your wallet, and offers the most important and relevant information students need to know.

PROBLEM #2

Also, students need to be reminded to stay watchful. A lot of the time, when a crime occurs, it was because the student appeared aloof, or wasn’t paying attention.

How can students stay watchful and realize that crime is real, and that it can happen to them?

SOLUTION #2

Crime tags marking the recent history of crime in the area will remind students when they are most vulnerable– out in the streets. They will pay more attention after realizing that just a week before, a student was robbed at that exact place.

PROBLEM #3

There needs to be more of a connection between all of the students, and also the students with the security guards at the school. In a student survey I conducted, many students didn’t even think that guards made rounds through the campus every night. One girl mentioned that she doesn’t feel she can call security when an issue arises, or if she needs an escort home, because she doesn’t know them.

Also, it takes a long time for students to see other students crime reports, because the security office needs to record them, type them up, print them off, and hang them up all over campus. Yet even still, many times these postings go unnoticed.

How can students feel familiar with security guards enough to actually use the services they provide, and how can the crime reporting system be expedited to increase communication between students?

SOLUTION #3

A website and iPhone application will allow students to submit a report right from their phone or computer screen, which would then be instantly added to an ongoing report list, for everyone to see.

Also, both the iPhone app and website offer a live map of the campus and surrounding area, which pinpoints the location of on-duty security guards, and gives detailed information on each guard, to humanize them a bit. This makes it much easier to get in contact with them, and use already existing services.
